Siliguri, August 11, 2026: Siliguri witnessed a fresh crackdown on illegal roadside parking on Tuesday, shortly after the new parking facility at Kanchanjungha Stadium’s fairground became operational.
Teams from the Panitanki Traffic Guard conducted parking enforcement drives in Khudiram Pally, Bidhhan Road and adjoining lanes, targeting vehicles parked along roadsides and in narrow lanes. Several vehicles were loaded onto recovery vans, while their owners were fined for parking violations.
The traffic police have maintained that with the stadium parking facility now available, vehicles should no longer be parked on city roads in violation of traffic regulations. Despite the notice, several cars were found parked in alleys and roadside areas, prompting the enforcement drive.
However, the action led to arguments between police personnel and local traders. Some traders claimed that they have been operating businesses in the area for years and that many residential and commercial buildings have basement parking facilities.
According to the traders, some of these parking spaces have allegedly been sold or are otherwise unavailable for public use, leaving them with limited alternatives and forcing them to park their vehicles on the roads.
Traffic officials, however, maintained a firm stance, stating that vehicles obstructing roads or disrupting traffic movement would face legal action.
With the Kanchanjungha Stadium parking facility now operational, traffic authorities are expected to continue enforcement drives to keep Siliguri’s roads and lanes free from illegal parking and ensure smoother traffic movement.
