SILIGURI: North Bengal could see significant improvements in connectivity, healthcare, tourism and sports infrastructure following a series of development-related decisions taken by the West Bengal government.
The announcements were made during an administrative review meeting held at Uttar Kanya in Siliguri on Tuesday, chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Darjeeling Lok Sabha MP Raju Bista subsequently shared details of the proposed initiatives, which cover the Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars and other parts of North Bengal.
One of the major announcements is the approval of a nearly 21-kilometre ropeway connecting Kurseong and Darjeeling. The proposed project is expected to provide an alternative transportation facility between the two hill towns, where heavy traffic congestion frequently creates difficulties for residents and tourists, particularly during peak travel seasons. The proposed route is expected to connect important locations, including Sonada and Ghoom, subject to the project's final planning.
Healthcare infrastructure also featured prominently in the government's development plans. A new medical college in Kalimpong is among the key initiatives, with the Chief Minister scheduled to lay its foundation stone on December 9. The institution is expected to strengthen medical education and improve access to healthcare services for people living in the hill region.
Alongside the proposed medical college, the government has decided to undertake repairs, modernisation and infrastructure upgrades at existing hospitals in Darjeeling, Kurseong, Kalimpong, Mirik and Siliguri. The improvements are intended to strengthen healthcare facilities and provide better medical services to residents across the region.
In another important decision concerning sports development, the historic Lebong Ground in Darjeeling will be transformed into a modern stadium equipped with improved facilities. The initiative aims to encourage sporting activities, provide better opportunities for local athletes and support emerging talent from the hills.
Religious tourism and heritage infrastructure have also received attention. The government has approved an allocation of ₹19 crore for the beautification, development and maintenance of the Mahakal Temple premises in Darjeeling. The proposed improvements are expected to enhance facilities for devotees while strengthening the area's appeal as an important religious tourism destination.
Additionally, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has directed the concerned authorities to undertake repairs and refurbishment of government-operated tourist lodges across the region. The move is aimed at improving accommodation facilities and strengthening tourism infrastructure for visitors travelling to North Bengal.
According to Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, these initiatives reflect the government's focus on addressing the developmental requirements of the Darjeeling hills, Terai and Dooars. He expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister and stated that improvements in connectivity, healthcare, sports and tourism could create employment opportunities, encourage economic activity and benefit local communities.
With these announcements, North Bengal has received a fresh push towards infrastructure development. However, the actual impact of the initiatives will depend on their implementation, project timelines and the completion of the proposed works.
