A potential flood situation has prompted a special advisory for parts of West Bengal and Assam after a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) was reported at Shintaphu Lake in Bhutan.
According to an advisory issued by the Flood Forecast Monitoring Directorate of the Central Water Commission (CWC), Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, the incident was reported through information received from the Indian Embassy in Bhutan.
The advisory highlights the possibility of a sudden rise in water levels in the downstream stretches of the Punatsangchhu River, also known as the Sankosh River in India, following reports of flash flooding in its upper reaches.
The floodwater is expected to move downstream and could reach the India-Bhutan border within approximately 6–8 hours of the advisory. The situation may particularly affect Alipurduar district in West Bengal and Dhubri district in Assam.
In view of the potential risk, local authorities in both districts, especially those situated along the Sankosh River, have been advised to remain on high alert, closely monitor river conditions and initiate necessary precautionary measures.
Residents in vulnerable riverside areas should follow official instructions, avoid approaching riverbanks and remain attentive to updates from local administration and disaster management authorities.
The advisory, dated 29 October 2026, calls for close monitoring to minimise potential risks to people and property.
