Siliguri, August 12, 2026: A joint drive by the Food Safety Department and Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) has uncovered serious food safety lapses at several establishments across Siliguri.
On Tuesday, officials inspected multiple restaurants, sweet shops and hotels as part of the food safety drive. The inspections focused on food quality, expiry dates, storage practices, kitchen hygiene and the health documentation of food handlers.
During the inspection, expired food items were found at a restaurant inside Planet Mall in Siliguri. Following the discovery, officials issued a notice to the restaurant management.
Authorities are also examining whether the expired products had been used in preparing food served to customers.
Officials further sought medical reports and other health-related documents of the restaurant's food handlers. However, the management failed to produce the required documents during the inspection and assured officials that the records would be submitted soon.
The Food Safety Department said such inspections will continue across Siliguri to ensure compliance with food safety standards and protect public health, particularly ahead of the festive season.
Further action against the establishments found violating food safety norms will depend on the findings of the inspection and subsequent proceedings.
