Kolkata, August 7: In a major anti-smuggling operation, the NSCBI Airport Police Station foiled an alleged jewellery smuggling attempt near Kolkata Airport, seizing 400 grams of gold ornaments, over 900 grams of silver jewellery, and a scooter used in the operation. One person has been arrested in connection with the case.
According to police sources, the operation was launched after officers received a confidential tip-off late yesterday afternoon regarding the movement of a consignment of gold and silver ornaments through the airport cargo area.
Acting swiftly on the information, police personnel established security barricades and intensified vehicle checking around the airport premises. During the operation, a scooter attempting to move towards the cargo zone in a suspicious manner was intercepted.
A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 400 grams of gold jewellery and more than 900 grams of silver ornaments, which had allegedly been concealed inside the scooter.
The rider was identified as Ramavatar Sharma, a resident of Rajasthan. He was immediately taken into custody, and the recovered jewellery along with the scooter was seized by the police.
Officials stated that the accused will be produced before the Barrackpore Court today. Investigating officers are expected to seek police custody to further interrogate him and uncover the source and intended destination of the seized valuables.
Police are also investigating whether Sharma is linked to a larger jewellery smuggling racket operating through the airport and if other individuals were involved in the operation.
Authorities have confirmed that surveillance and security measures around the airport will remain heightened to prevent similar illegal activities. A case has been registered, and further investigation is currently underway.
