Darjeeling, September 10, 2026: U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited Darjeeling at the invitation of Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Harsh Vardhan Shringla, in an engagement that brought a diplomatic visit closer to the cultural life and communities of the Himalayan hill town.
Accompanied by members of his team, Ambassador Gor explored several aspects of Darjeeling during his visit, from its historic landmarks and local cuisine to its world-renowned railway heritage. The visit also included interactions with students and young people, providing an opportunity to discuss the aspirations of a new generation and their growing engagement with global opportunities.
During the visit, Ambassador Gor and his team went to the residence of Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Ivanhoe, located near Darjeeling’s historic Mall. There, the Ambassador sampled local delicacies, including momos, and enjoyed a cup of Castleton First Flush tea, one of the region’s distinctive tea offerings.
Gor also expressed his appreciation for Darjeeling’s scenic beauty and peaceful atmosphere, describing the hills as a place marked by tranquillity and a distinctive charm.
The U.S. Ambassador subsequently visited The Mall Road, one of Darjeeling’s most recognisable landmarks and the historic centre of the town. His visit there offered an opportunity to experience the unique combination of heritage, culture and everyday life that defines Darjeeling.
Another major part of the programme was a ride on the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the Toy Train. Travelling through the hills, Ambassador Gor and his delegation experienced one of the region’s most celebrated heritage attractions, reflecting Darjeeling’s longstanding connection with visitors from across the world.
The Ambassador also met with students and young people during his stay. The interaction focused attention on the importance of youth in shaping India’s future and contributing to the country’s engagement with the international community.
The enthusiasm displayed by the students reflected the aspirations of a younger generation that is increasingly connected to the world and interested in exploring new opportunities beyond traditional boundaries.
The visit also underlined the importance of strengthening the India-U.S. relationship through cultural exchange, community engagement and shared experiences. It provided an opportunity to connect the broader bilateral partnership with the people and heritage of Darjeeling.
During the visit, Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla highlighted Darjeeling’s considerable tourism potential and the scope for presenting its natural landscape, cultural heritage and distinctive identity to a wider international audience.
Ambassador Sergio Gor, meanwhile, said he thoroughly enjoyed his time in Darjeeling and expressed hope that more American tourists would visit the hill town to experience its natural beauty, tranquillity and unique character.
