Kolkata, October 18, 2026: The festive atmosphere in Kolkata has been overshadowed by a tragic crowd crush at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata. Following the incident, which reportedly claimed 19 lives and left 25 people injured, authorities have directed several major Durga Puja organisers to temporarily restrict or suspend public entry as a precautionary measure.
The decision comes amid growing concerns over crowd management and public safety at some of the city's most popular pandal-hopping destinations.
Several prominent puja venues have been affected by the administrative measures. According to media reports, Tala Pratyay, Alipore Sarbojanin, Chetla Agrani and Ballygunge Sarbojanin were among the pandals instructed to stop admitting visitors temporarily.
The Chorbagan Sarbojanin pandal, where the tragedy occurred, has also been closed to visitors. Meanwhile, the Santosh Mitra Square Durga Puja committee has restricted visitor entry to manage the crowd.
Authorities have indicated that the restrictions are precautionary and may be reviewed depending on the situation and further safety assessments.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, October 17, when a large number of visitors gathered at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata.
Reports indicate that heavy crowds and rainfall contributed to congestion near a narrow exit. As pressure built up among visitors, people fell and were reportedly trampled in the resulting crowd crush.
Emergency teams rescued injured visitors and shifted them to hospitals for treatment. The tragedy has once again brought attention to the importance of properly managed entry and exit routes, crowd-flow planning and emergency response arrangements at large public gatherings.
Allen Park, which hosted Durga Puja celebrations for the first time in 2026, has also scaled back its festivities following the tragedy.
According to reports, organisers stopped the music and laser light show as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives. The decision reflects the broader move to prioritise public safety and respond sensitively to the incident.
Visitors planning to attend any of the affected venues should check the latest announcements from the organisers and local authorities before travelling.
The temporary restrictions highlight the challenges of managing exceptionally large crowds during Kolkata's Durga Puja celebrations. Popular theme-based pandals can attract thousands of visitors within a short period, particularly during peak hours and adverse weather conditions.
Clear exit routes, controlled visitor entry, trained volunteers and coordination with police and emergency services are essential to reducing risks at crowded venues.
The administration's next steps and any decision to reopen affected pandals will depend on updated instructions and safety assessments. Until then, visitors are advised to cooperate with officials, avoid overcrowded areas and follow the instructions issued at each venue.
