Siliguri: This year's Durga Puja celebrations in Siliguri have drawn widespread attention as Central Colony presents an extraordinary display featuring more than 100 kg of genuine gold ornaments adorning Maa Durga and the other idols.
Organised by the Central Colony Durga Puja Committee, the celebration marks the 64th year of the puja, which dates back to 1962. The grand display has emerged as one of the notable attractions of Durga Puja 2026 in North Bengal.
The highlight of this year's celebration is the elaborate gold jewellery adorning Goddess Durga and the other figures, including Mahishasura. The extensive use of gold has added a distinctive touch to the traditional festivities, drawing devotees and visitors eager to witness the spectacular presentation.
The mandap's design complements the golden theme, bringing together artistic craftsmanship and religious tradition. The initiative reflects the committee's effort to introduce a distinctive attraction for the annual celebration.
The Central Colony Durga Puja mandap was formally inaugurated on October 13, 2026, by Dr Jayanta Kumar Roy, Member of Parliament from Jalpaiguri.
The opening marked the beginning of public visits to the elaborate installation, which has attracted attention across Siliguri and neighbouring areas.
Given the enormous quantity of gold on display, organisers have put stringent security measures in place. Reports indicate that more than 40 CCTV cameras have been installed, alongside security personnel, police coordination and crowd-management arrangements.
The measures are designed to protect the ornaments while ensuring that devotees can visit the pandal safely and view the idols in an orderly manner.
Durga Puja is celebrated across North Bengal with elaborate pandals, artistic idols and community participation. Central Colony's gold-themed presentation has added a distinctive attraction to Siliguri's festive landscape this year.
As the city welcomes devotees and pandal-hoppers, the 64th edition of Central Colony Durga Puja stands out for its combination of religious devotion, craftsmanship and an extraordinary display of gold ornaments.
