Kolkata: Brazil marked their first-ever senior men’s international meeting with India with a convincing 4-0 victory at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as Salt Lake Stadium, on Saturday.
India began the contest with confidence and managed to keep Brazil under pressure during the early stages. However, the visitors gradually took control of the game and opened the scoring in the 28th minute.
Estêvão found the breakthrough with a left-footed effort after cutting inside from the right. Brazil doubled their advantage just before half-time when Pedro finished after being set up by Estêvão, sending the visitors into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Brazil continued to dominate after the interval. Samuel Lino added the third goal in the 58th minute, taking advantage of space on the left before finding the bottom corner.
India continued to search for a response, with Ryan Williams and Manvir Singh creating opportunities, but Brazil goalkeeper Pedro Morisco kept the hosts from finding a goal.
Lino completed his brace deep into stoppage time, scoring in the 90+5th minute to seal Brazil's 4-0 victory.
The match was played in front of around 51,000 spectators at Salt Lake Stadium and marked a significant occasion for Indian football, with Brazil making their first appearance on Indian soil for a senior men's international fixture.
Brazil, coached by Carlo Ancelotti, finished their Australia-India tour with two wins and one draw. For India, the result extended their winless run to six matches.
