Sikkim: A major infrastructure boost is on the way for Sikkim as the Centre has approved ₹993.64 crore for the development of the Rangpo–Ranipool stretch of National Highway-10 (NH-10).
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the approval, stating that the project will transform the existing corridor into a two-lane highway with paved shoulders.
The planned work will include the construction of tunnels, viaducts and bridges, along with treatment of vulnerable sliding and sinking zones. The measures are aimed at making the important Himalayan corridor safer and more resilient against challenging terrain and landslide-related disruptions.
The Rangpo–Ranipool route is a crucial connectivity link towards Gangtok and other parts of Sikkim. Once upgraded, the corridor is expected to facilitate smoother movement of tourists, essential commodities and agricultural and horticultural products.
The project also carries strategic importance. According to Gadkari, improved road infrastructure will strengthen connectivity for the movement of defence personnel and supplies, while supporting Sikkim's wider socio-economic development.
The development comes amid a broader push to strengthen road connectivity in the Sikkim and North Bengal region. Raju Bista, Darjeeling MP and newly appointed BJP State In-Charge for Sikkim, has also highlighted the Centre's infrastructure initiatives aimed at creating multiple connectivity routes to Sikkim and reducing dependence on NH-10.
The official NHIDCL tender covers the Rangpo to Ranipool stretch from approximately km 53.50 to km 79.371, including the proposed tunnels, viaducts and treatment of vulnerable sections.
The upgraded highway is expected to provide a safer, faster and more reliable road connection to Gangtok, while strengthening the region's tourism, trade, logistics and strategic connectivity.
