Kolkata: In a major infrastructure push for West Bengal, the Centre has sanctioned ₹508.66 crore for strengthening and selective widening of two key national highways in Birbhum district.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the approval on October 3, stating that the project will cover significant stretches of NH-14 and NH-114.
Under the project, around 91.90 km of NH-14 between Bhimgarh and Nalhati via Mallarpur will be strengthened. Another 56.40 km of NH-114, covering the stretch from Surul Village to Mallarpur, is also included in the plan.
The proposed road improvements are expected to make journeys safer and smoother while helping reduce congestion and travel time. The upgraded corridors will also improve the movement of passengers and goods and provide stronger links between villages, towns and important economic centres.
According to Gadkari, the highway development is also expected to support regional trade, local businesses and economic activity by creating more efficient routes for commuters and freight operators.
The announcement comes as the Centre continues to focus on improving the quality, safety and connectivity of national highways across West Bengal. In June 2026, Gadkari had also reviewed the maintenance and quality of 3,748 km of National Highway projects in West Bengal.
