Bishkek, August 31, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek. The meeting marked the first interaction between the two leaders this year.
During their talks, Modi and Putin took stock of the progress made in the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, covering a wide range of areas including politics, trade, defence, energy, space, mobility and people-to-people relations.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders welcomed the results of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, which was held in Moscow on August 24, 2026.
The discussions also covered cooperation between the two countries at various multilateral forums. Particular attention was given to BRICS, where India is holding the chairship for 2026.
Modi and Putin also exchanged views on important regional and international developments. Their discussions included the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, with both sides taking note of their impact on maritime trade and the safety and security of Indian seafarers.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward for resolving conflicts.
The two leaders agreed to maintain close engagement and continue efforts to further deepen bilateral ties. The India-Russia relationship, according to the MEA, has continued to demonstrate resilience and growth despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
Prime Minister Modi also extended an invitation to President Putin to visit India for the 18th BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held on September 12 and 13, 2026.
The meeting comes as India and Russia continue to strengthen their longstanding strategic partnership while navigating an evolving global geopolitical environment.
