Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh paid tribute to Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The leaders remembered the veteran freedom fighter for his contributions to Indian democracy, social reform and public life.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi recalled how Jayaprakash Narayan inspired generations of people to view public service as a means of bringing positive change to the nation. He also highlighted Narayan's courageous stand during the Emergency and his commitment to good governance and the welfare of disadvantaged communities.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah described Narayan as a dedicated freedom fighter who devoted his life to the service of the country and society. Shah also recalled his efforts to mobilise young people during the freedom struggle, strengthen rural communities and promote the Sarvodaya movement after independence. He noted that Narayan's call for Total Revolution during the Emergency became a rallying point for millions of Indians.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid homage to the veteran leader, highlighting his commitment to democratic principles, constitutional rights and accountability in public life. Singh recalled Narayan's opposition to authoritarianism during the Emergency and said his struggle to protect civil liberties and democratic rights remains an important part of India's history.
Jayaprakash Narayan, popularly known as JP or Loknayak, was one of India's prominent freedom fighters and political reformers. He became widely recognised for his role in the movement for Sampoorna Kranti, or Total Revolution, which called for broad changes in political, social and administrative systems. His leadership during the Emergency of 1975–1977 made him a significant figure in the movement to restore democratic freedoms.
Narayan's legacy continues to be associated with public accountability, social justice and citizen participation in governance. The tributes from the Prime Minister and the two Union Ministers brought renewed attention to his contribution to India's freedom struggle and his enduring influence on the country's democratic tradition.
