Kolkata, August 30, 2026: The West Bengal government has renewed its efforts to bring Behala Airport back into operation, with the state seeking the Centre’s cooperation to introduce flight services from the long neglected airport.
As part of the initiative, West Bengal Sports Minister and Behala West MLA Indranil Khan met Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu in New Delhi on Monday. During the meeting, Khan handed over a letter from West Bengal Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari, outlining the state government’s request for the revival of Behala Airport.
According to the state government, making the airport operational could play an important role in improving connectivity and supporting economic activity in the region. The government has highlighted the airport’s potential contribution to Kolkata’s industrial development as well as the growth of South 24 Parganas.
The state has also pointed to the airport’s possible role in strengthening regional air connectivity, facilitating emergency medical services and supporting tourism and trade across West Bengal.
Khan urged the Union Civil Aviation Minister to consider the revival of the airport and facilitate the resumption of flight operations. The state government has maintained that Behala Airport has remained underutilised for a considerable period and that its revival could provide new opportunities for connectivity and development.
Following the meeting, Ram Mohan Naidu also shared his response on social media. He said it was encouraging to hear Minister Indranil Khan speak about the enthusiasm and new opportunities emerging in West Bengal under the new government.
Naidu further indicated that expanding airport operations in the state could help create greater opportunities for business and commerce. He said that making airports, including Behala Airport, operational would help open up West Bengal’s skies further and strengthen the state’s connectivity.
The latest development signals the state government’s push to bring Behala Airport back into active use, with the Centre’s cooperation expected to be crucial for taking the proposal forward.
