According to local media reports, the tanker was travelling from the Kolkata airport side towards Barasat when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle after a tyre burst. The tanker struck a road divider and overturned, spilling diesel across the road.
The fuel spill created a hazardous situation for commuters, forcing vehicles to move slowly and disrupting traffic on the affected stretch. The accident caused significant inconvenience to office-goers and other passengers travelling towards Barasat.
Personnel from Airport Traffic Guard reached the scene to manage the situation and assist with the recovery operation. Emergency responders also worked to address the fuel spill, while sand was spread across the affected road surface to reduce the risk of vehicles skidding.
According to reports published on Thursday morning, both the tanker driver and the helper sustained serious injuries and were taken for medical treatment. The vehicle's removal and the clean-up operation added to the traffic disruption.
Motorists travelling along Jessore Road were advised to exercise caution and expect delays while emergency teams worked to make the road safe.
The incident once again highlights the risks posed by fuel spills on busy roads, particularly during peak traffic hours, when even a single accident can cause widespread congestion.
