AGARTALA: Tripura Police have taken swift action following a violent confrontation involving Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and a group of villagers near the India-Bangladesh international border. Eight people have been arrested within 24 hours in connection with the incident, which took place in the Ashabari area of Boxanagar in Sepahijala district on November 2.
According to reports, the confrontation began when BSF personnel deployed at the Ashabari Border Outpost (BOP), under the 49th Battalion, noticed suspected cross-border smuggling activities near the international boundary. During the operation, the personnel attempted to apprehend an Indian individual allegedly involved in the activity, while others reportedly managed to escape.
The situation subsequently escalated after the individual allegedly informed local residents that he had been assaulted by BSF personnel. Following this, a group of villagers reportedly gathered near the area and confronted the security personnel.
The situation turned violent when the crowd allegedly surrounded a BSF vehicle and attacked the personnel using sticks, bamboo poles and other objects. Three BSF personnel, including a Company Commander, were reported injured in the incident. Reports also indicated that the attackers attempted to snatch a service weapon from one of the personnel and damaged a BSF vehicle.
Following the incident, senior police and BSF officials intervened, while police teams initiated an operation to identify those involved. Eight suspects were arrested, with authorities continuing efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals allegedly connected to the violence.
Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha strongly condemned the attack and directed the concerned authorities to take stringent action against those responsible. He confirmed the arrests through a public statement, emphasising that violence against security personnel would not be tolerated and that everyone involved would face legal consequences.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over border security and the challenges faced by security personnel while preventing illegal cross-border activities. The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances leading to the confrontation and determine the individual roles of those accused.
The police investigation remains underway, with authorities pursuing further action against the remaining suspects.
